The Connection Between Porn & Crime in T&T

Did you know that Trinidad and Tobago has one of the highest ratios of porn searches in the world? In these troubling times when women are falling victim to heinous sex crimes, one must wonder is the high consumption of porn directly linked to this.

In today’s Newsday, our attention was drawn to a story about two young girls, ages 8 and 9 years, who allegedly were fondled by a neighbour while he watched a pornographic movie. The incident took place in Debe, one of the areas highlighted as having a high search rate for porn on the internet. This most recent incident brings to the fore the question as to why so many of our women fall victim to these heinous crimes. Porn sexualizes females to the point where they are viewed as objects for pleasure. The consumer does not care about who she is, who her parents are or what her dreams and ambitions are. In fact, the camera rarely focuses on her face. Instead, her body parts are described in a way that only appeals to preferences and fetishes. It’s no wonder, men are emboldened to cat call, grab, hurt, rape and kill women. The idea of respect has long disappeared.

The Porn Industry

Porn is a lucrative and powerful industry. It appeals to the baser side of human nature. As with all businesses, the ability to supply the high demand for porn consumption has evolved. Years ago, access to porn was limited. Now, the internet feeds the high demand for such content by making it even more accessible to its ever growing audience. From desktops to laptops to mobile devices it is everywhere. Trinidad and Tobago is no exception.

Domestic Internet Market

Before we delve deeper, one must first understand our internet demographic and how this relates to local online porn consumption. Statistics show that there are 942,713 internet users in Trinidad and Tobago (internetlivestats.com). This accounts for 69.1 % of our population. Now that’s a lot of persons using the internet or having access to it. With all of this access, what are Trinbagonians using the internet for and what are they consuming online? Are they studying? Are they working remotely? Are they freelancing for multinational corporations?

Online Porn Consumption

While the internet can have many uses, Google Trends has flagged Trinidad and Tobago as one of the highest consumers of online porn. What does this mean? This means that locals are utilizing the information superhighway to access porn websites in order to satisfy their need for adult entertainment. Google Trends also brings into focus specific areas of our country where it seems like porn is the favourite pastime. Seriously…check this out.

Something To Think About…

Disclaimer: Whatever people choose to do in the privacy of their homes or in their spare time (once it’s legal), is totally up to them.

BUT…What does our online porn consumption say about our society and its implications? Let’s be honest, our society is becoming over sexualized and is quickly degenerating. This is evident by the high number of sex crime related incidents such as rapes, incest, child abuse and human trafficking, just to name a few.  Is online porn consumption encouraging deviant sexual desires? Are the recent increase in sex crimes the expressions of said desires? Now, this is something to think about!
