Hey kids! Do you want to help the birds in your garden and recycle at the same time? Let’s make a super cool bird feeder using a plastic bottle! This fun project is easy to do and helps our feathered friends get their snacks. Let’s get started!
What You Need:
- An empty plastic bottle (1 or 2 liters)
- Bird seed
- Two wooden spoons or wooden sticks
- String or wire
- Scissors (be sure to ask an adult for help!)
- A marker
- A funnel (if you have one)
Steps:
- Clean the Bottle:
- Wash the bottle thoroughly and remove any labels.
- Mark the Spots:
- Use the marker to draw two small holes near the bottom of the bottle. Make sure they are on opposite sides.
- Draw two more holes a bit higher up for the second perch.
- Cut the Holes:
- With an adult’s help, use the scissors to carefully cut out the holes you drew. These will be for the spoons or sticks.
- Insert the Perches:
- Push the wooden spoons or sticks through the holes. The spoon part will be the perch for the birds, and the handle inside will help hold the seeds.
- Make Feeding Holes:
- Cut small holes just above each perch so the birds can get to the seeds.
- Fill the Bottle:
- Use a funnel (or carefully pour) to fill the bottle with bird seed. The seeds should fill the bottom and reach up to the perches.
- Add the Hanging Loop:
- Poke two small holes near the top of the bottle. Thread a piece of string or wire through these holes to make a loop for hanging.
- Hang Your Feeder:
- Find a nice spot in your garden, like a tree branch, and hang your bird feeder.
- Watch the Birds:
- Now, watch and see which birds come to visit. You might even want to keep a journal of all the different kinds you see!
Tips:
- Hang your feeder in a quiet spot where birds feel safe.
- Refill the seeds regularly and clean the feeder to keep it healthy for the birds.
- Take notes or draw pictures of the birds you see. It’s a great way to learn more about them!
Making a bird feeder is a fun and easy way to help the environment and enjoy nature. So grab an adult, get your materials, and let’s get started!
Happy bird watching! 🐦🌳
