Dos and Don’ts of Planning an Outdoor Wedding

Planning your nuptials outside is undoubtedly more challenging than planning for a regular indoor wedding. So here are some general tips about what you should definitely do and what you should definitely not do for the sake of having an enjoyable time.

DO

Visit the site before the day of the ceremony at the same time your wedding is carded to start. Take note of the sun’s position and anything else in the surroundings that could negatively affect your guests or the ceremony itself. Carry along persons who can help you make decisions, such as your wedding planner or trusted friend or family member, and importantly, the photographer.

DON’T

…skimp on the photographer. Yes, you have a budget and it’s important to stay within your means. But, consider the technicalities of shooting outside. Make sure the photographer is a professional who knows how to adjust for unpredictable lighting, visual impediments (dust, sand, bugs etc.), and other factors that could arise from being at the mercy of nature. If you have a loved one who’s capable and willing to provide service free of charge, then all the better. Just ensure they know what they’re doing.

DO

Have a backup plan. Nobody likes to think that their wedding could go horribly wrong. Chances of disaster are slim if you’ve meticulously prepared every detail. But, there is no guarantee that natural elements, like rain, are prepared to dis-invite themselves. You cannot control everything. For the sake of saving the day in an emergency; draft a contingency plan. Inside or outside (at another spot), it doesn’t matter as long it’s easy to transition from one venue to the next.

DON’T

…plan the menu without considering aspects of the climate conditions. If the outdoor area is humid or dry or cold or extremely hot around the time of year you’re getting married, then plan the dishes with the expected temperature in mind. Guests will appreciate the food’s quality and storing leftovers will be easier. Also, consider how to store and serve the food with factors such as insects and dust that could be present at the site. It’s important to hire a caterer with an expertise in menu planning for such occasions.

DO

Advise your intended guests on what to expect at the location before the day of the wedding. Just a simple mass email/message outlining the logistics of the area, how to find the spot, where to park, what type of shoes/clothing is most suitable for their comfort, what type of insects/flora might be around (in case someone has allergies), and anything else you think might be pertinent, would be appreciated by those who might need to decide if they are able to attend based on the information.

DON’T

…forget to enjoy yourself. This is perhaps the most important tip. Getting caught up in the hassle of planning can sometimes make you forget that you’re going to be married! It should be a happy day for you and your spouse, not one filled with worry or frustration. Especially over a minor detail that has no value in the grand scheme of your marriage!
